Where does the answer come from?
From the European Commission's VIES service for EU VAT numbers, and from ANAF, the Romanian tax authority, for Romanian tax IDs (CUI).
Why check a VAT number?
Before you invoice a business in another EU country without VAT (reverse charge), you need its valid VAT number. Checking it also shows the registered name and address to put on the invoice.
